Iberdrola, the number one energy group in Spain and the fourth largest utility company in the world by market cap, selected InnoEnergy to launch an energy challenge addressed to students and alumni. The main objective of this activity was to encourage InnoEnergy participants to promote a new sustainable and self-energy efficient society.
InnoEnergy and Iberdrola had challenged the participants of the Iberdrola Energy Challenge 2016 to develop solutions in three areas: globally affordable energy models; new digital models which rethink the relationship between utilities and their customers; and developing a social economy which makes energy more accessible. The initiative was aimed at InnoEnergy students and graduates from 32 countries.
The winners of the Iberdrola Energy Challenge 2016 were the members of the “Save to Donate"” project, who proposed an initiative in which the energy saving made by Iberdrola´s customers is then reversed back in electricity access for disadvantaged regions. In this way, collaboration between Iberdrola and end users is encouraged in order to promote a better access to energy. The second award was for “DSO controlled PV-converters” project. This initiative consisted of a system of converters that facilitate better integration into the grid of solar panels for homes. The third place was for two projects: “Sharing Economy Concept in Electricity Grid” and “Eco – Sharing”.

The finalist groups were invited to attend the Digital Summit Event organized by Iberdrola in Madrid. The winners were chosen by ranking order via electronic voting by the audience, once the videos of the four finalist projects were displayed. The prizes were awarded by the Director of Innovation, Environment and Quality of Iberdrola, Agustín Delgado, and Mikel Lasa, CEO InnoEnergy Iberia.
