"Why experts have killed innovation"

I recently found this interesting article about the break that innovation had in the last years and how the peak of our intellectual activity has aged since the beginning of the last century. 


I do agree in part that nowadays we might have a higher specialization in certain fields and that those that are here called generalists are most of the time rare figures rejected from many company's positions, but I do believe there are many other factors implied. What is your opinion on this topic?
