What is an Ecological Footprint?
The ecological footprint measures human demand on nature, i.e., the quantity of nature it takes to support people or an economy. The ecological footprint is defined as the biologically productive area needed to provide for everything people use: fruits and vegetables, fish, wood, fibres, absorption of carbon dioxide from fossil fuel use, and space for buildings and roads.
It tracks this demand through an ecological accounting system. In short, it is a measure of human impact on Earth's ecosystem and reveals the dependence of the human economy on natural capital.
Ecological Footprint Calculator: Calculate your footprint now!
Dr. Mathis Wackernagel, Founder and CEO of Global Footprint Network who is also our Keynote Speaker at The CommUnity Days 2018 has developed a calculator that can determine YOUR personal Ecological Footprint. It also calculates YOUR overshoot day (This means the date by which you would have used up all the resources the earth can renew in a year).
Ecological Footprint vs. Happiness Index
As a CommUnity, we are engaged in building a sustainable world. But how sustainable are we truly in our day-to-day practices. I am sure we do better than the international average as we are well informed than the others but by how much?
We want to calculate the average Ecological Footprint of the members of the CommUnity and compare it with the average happiness level of the same. Yes! you read it right. But why Happiness? Because it helps us live longer, healthier and more productive lives. And being happy is a great goal in itself.
Have a look at the graph above. The pattern shows that High Ecological footprint is the typical cost of Happiness. All the modern countries tend to consume a lot and hence display high ecological footprint, whereas African and South American countries tend to consume less while maintaining higher happiness levels.
So where do we as the CommUnity stand?
Let's find it out! You can calculate your footprint and overshoot day using the calculator. Once you have calculated your results, you can share it anonymously using the link below. We are very excited to find out where in the map above do we stand.
Share this page and ask your peers and colleagues who are a part of the CommUnity to participate. The more results we have, the more accurate the data.
